Conservation

The restoration and conservation workshops have been housed since 1993 in their own facilities in ancillary buildings of the Lower Belvedere. The conservation and restoration workshops contain the following departments: paintings, incl. spraying chamber and chemical storage facilities, frames with gilding workshop, paper with mounting workshop, photographic and packing room, an in-house intermediate depot and offices.

Conservation and restoration of the museum holdings are subject to the following main agenda:

• Counselling on preventive conservatory measures and interventions to ensure the preservation of the holdings
• Scientific research and development of the holdings in terms of conservation
• Publication and communication of research results and the sustained fostering of awareness as regards matters of conservation and restoration, both in-house and external
• Implementation of necessary measures in conservation and restoration of the museum’s own holdings
• Counselling and conservatory care of loaned works and of procedures appertaining to loaning
• Conservatory care of exhibitions in the museum and also of outside loans
• Welfare and tuition of trainees before and after training
