At Augarten Contemporary, the former Atelier Augarten, exhibitions on contemporary art have
been held since 2011. The structure, featuring slanted windows to the north and generous
spatial volumes, is located in an English landscape garden and in recent years accommodated
such shows as Bert Neumann, BC21 Art Award Boston Consulting & BelvedereContemporary,
Constantin Luser, Ouyang Chung and VALIE EXPORT: Series.
From 2012 on, T-B A 21 will be responsible for the programme of Augarten Contemporary.
The Belvedere has reached an agreement with T-B A 21 and Francesca Habsburg that the venue will operate under the name of Thyssen-Bornemisza Augarten Contemporary for the next three years. Because of the opening of the new museum, the Belvedere will focus it’s contemporary art-programme at 21er Haus.
With T-B A 21 the innovative und versatile character that Augarten Contemporary has maintained during the last years can be continued in the future. Within the cooperation with T-B A 21, the floor space of Augarten Contemporary will be made available to an institution which in recent years has provided both Vienna and the international scene with significant impulses by dealing with contemporary art production on a superior level and with great commitment.
The museum has existed since 1978 and houses bronze and stone sculpture by the Austrian sculptor Gustinus Ambrosi. The Gustinus Ambrosi Museum will be preserved in its current form and will continue to be
attended to by the Belvedere.
In 2001, in the course of the refurbishment of the exhibition rooms at Augarten Contemporary, a studio and an apartment were created for an Artist in Residence-Programme. International artists are invited to spend three months in Vienna in order to present their works, familiarize themselves with the Austrian art scene, and enter into a dialogue with it. Since 2001, the following artists have participated in the Belvedere’s Artist in Residence-Programme: Jakob Kolding, Jonathan Monk, Róza El-Hassan, Ann-Sofi Sidén, Yoshitomo Nara and Hiroshi Sugito, Ugo Rondinone, Koo Jeong-A and Marcin Maciejowski, Silke Otto-Knapp, Julian Göthe, Gerard Byrne, Gülsün Karamustafa, Lucy McKenzie, Marianna Gartner, Christian Philip Müller, Monika Schwitte, Ouyang Chun, David Maljkovic, Daniel Knorr, Michael Riedel und Seb Patane.
