Blickle Kino

“Actually, cinema is a great many things. It is the material place where we go to be entertained by a spectacle of shadows, although these shadows induce an emotion in us that is more secret than the one expressed by the condescending term entertainment. It is also the accumulation and sedimentation of those presences within us as their reality is erased and altered: the other cinema, which is recomposed by our memories and our words, and which, in the end, strongly differs from what was presented when it unspooled during projection. Cinema is also an ideological apparatus producing images that circulate in society, images in which the latter recognizes the present state of its types, its past legend or its imagined futures.”

(Jacques Rancière)

May 2012 saw the grand opening of the cinema Blickle Kino at the 21er Haus. Thanks to the generous support of Ursula Blickle, Viennese architect Adolf Krischanitz could rebuild this cinema based on Karl Schwanzer’s original for the pavilion at the Brussels Expo in 1958. Today the Blickle Kino is Vienna’s only completely intact fifties’ cinema and boasts a wonderfully spacious auditorium and outstanding aesthetic design. Ursula Blickle’s generosity also encompassed all the technical equipment required for top-quality screening of all film and video formats. Blickle Kino thus meets all of today’s cinematic standards and can show the entire kaleidoscope of film, from the beginnings of the experimental and video film through to current artistic perspectives. Vienna’s museum scene has been enriched with a unique venue, representative of the Austrian capital’s ambitious post-war cinema architecture.

One of the pivotal roles of the Blickle Kino at the 21er Haus is to promote public discussion about film and cinema, art and science. It enters into the debates about the history and future of motion pictures in the context of image and media culture in the twenty-first century. Blickle Kino and its partner the Ursula Blickle Foundation, pursue the goal of placing contemporary films and videos in the context of both the history of film and of art, thus demonstrating correlations and trends in history. Here the multiple facets of current film and video art are presented and discussed. Filmmakers, curators, and programmers are always being invited to give their views on their work, and thus a forum is evolving where one can find out about the latest trends.
