An installation by Joseph Kosuth

In 1989 American Conceptual artist Joseph Kosuth realized the installation Zero & Not on the fiftieth anniversary of Sigmund Freud’s death. It marked the beginning of the Sigmund Freud Museum Contemporary Art Collection featuring many outstanding international artists. These artworks all reflect the continual exploration of Sigmund Freud’s theories and include works by John Baldessari, Pierpaolo Calzolari, Clegg & Guttmann, Georg Herold, Jenny Holzer, Ilya Kabakov, Haim Steinbach, and Franz West.

In September 2014, the seventy-fifth anniversary of Freud’s death, this emphasis on linking contemporary art and psychoanalysis will be continued at the 21er Haus in collaboration with the Sigmund Freud Museum. The 21er Haus exhibition will showcase a selection of works from the Freud Museum and the Belvedere’s collection in addition to further international contemporary artworks that are also devoted to the theories of Freud.
