Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663-1736) was the greatest Austrian military commander. He arrived at the imperial court of Leopold I in 1683 as a man of no means. In the same year he began his illustrious career at the Raising of the Siege of Vienna by the Turks. Prince Eugene was a key figure in the political and economic rise of the House of Habsburg. The Belvedere, his summer residence, is one of the highest achievements of Austrian baroque art, and he exercised a key influence on its design.
