The sala terrena or ground-floor hall is dominated by four mighty atlantes supporting the room’s richly stuccoed ceiling vaulting. This ceiling vaulting, originally in one piece, collapsed in the winter of 1732/33, requiring the installation of four supports. The sala terrena opens up to the garden side of the Upper Belvedere and leads to the ceremonial staircase, it is a garden hall and vestibule in one.
