The Party - Blake Edwards, USA 1968, 94 min.

Unteres Belvedere,KammergartenBelvedere
Event free with valid ticket.
The Indian extra Hrundi V. Bakshi destroys a film set by his clumsiness. The angry producer of the film has him blacklisted, but the shy Hrundi accidentally gets an invitation to his party. Hrundi feels honoured, tries to attract as little attention as possible – and in the course of the evening transforms the party into a scene of breakdowns, embarrassments, and excesses. A gorgeously silly song of praise for the anarchic energy of outsiders in an outlandish society!

Cinema in the Kammergarten - Spirit of 68

Vienna’s most enchanting open-air cinema, Cinema in the Kammergarten, is this year spreading Flower Power vibes in Prince Eugene’s private garden by the Lower Belvedere. True to the motto Spirit of 68, from 1 to 22 August films about new beginnings, revolt, and social change will be shown daily at 9 pm.

This is the second summer of open-air cinema in the Kammergarten. And once again a summer bar with drinks and snacks makes for a chilled after-work atmosphere. Spirit of 68 echoes this year’s theme at Belvedere 21. Moviegoers can enjoy a film programme covering everything from hippie utopias to protest movements in the garden’s magical atmosphere. The ticket for the Lower Belvedere is also your cinema ticket. The museum is open until 9 pm throughout the season of films. There is also a tour of the exhibition Say it with Flowers! Viennese Flower Painting from Waldmüller to Klimt in the Orangery at 7 pm (in German).

Bad weather:
In case of bad weather, we will announce a possible cancellation as soon as possible on our Facebook page.
If the rain starts during the film, we will still try to show the film as far as possible. If this is not possible, we have to cancel.

My Summer of Love - Paweł Pawlikowski, UK 2004, 89 min.

Unteres Belvedere,KammergartenBelvedere
Event free with valid ticket.
Two 16-year-old girls escape from the dullness of the English countryside by engaging in an enchanted romantic affair. The differences between their outer appearance and character are what lead Mona and Tamsin to their mutual attraction and ultimately to a bitter awakening from their beautiful summer dream. A film that surprises from beginning to end with funny, intelligent, and heart-warming twists.

Zabriskie Point - Michelangelo Antonioni, USA 1970, 107 min.

Unteres Belvedere,KammergartenBelvedere
Event free with valid ticket.
In a poetic and pensive way, Zabriskie Point critiques Western consumer society, while delighting in the era’s counterculture.  The initial debates, demonstrations, and shootings gradually fold into a story of escape into the pipe dreams of a hippie utopia.  At the end, the film turns into an LSD trip as the psychedelic sounds of Pink Floyd combine with the slow-motion explosion of a villa and all sorts of household items are whirled through the air.

A Walk on the Moon - Tony Goldwyn, USA 1999, 107 min.

Unteres Belvedere,KammergartenBelvedere
Event free with valid ticket.
An eventful decade comes to an end and bestows upon the world two more milestones: the moon landing and Woodstock. Drawn by the spirit of optimism, Pearl breaks with her bleak marital life and makes up for lost time in a camp near Woodstock. An affair with a cool hippie confronts her with difficult decisions. The placidly narrated movie is one of the few recollections of the period of flower power, conveying, without nostalgia, the atmosphere of the era.

Unteres Belvedere,KammergartenBelvedere
Event free with valid ticket.
Martin has neither a real job nor real worries. He takes each day as it comes. A break-in, which he happens to observe, barely fazes him. He only goes to the police because a friend asks him to. There as well, he behaves with such indifference to the crime as to make himself suspicious. Only with the unconventional help of the stylish Barbara is he able to escape. The ‘Kuratorium Junger Deutscher Film’ [Young German Film Board] could have used more of this type of comedy.
