**Carsten Höller: LIFE at TBA21
The Interactive Installation Y at the Upper Belvedere
Note: The Installation is not on view from 24th to 30th of July.**

In a first collaborative project, Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary (TBA21–Augarten) and the Belvedere are presenting works by the Belgian-German artist Carsten Höller in the context of the exhibition LIFE from 10 July to 23 November 2014. The show revolves around a selection of works – some from the TBA21 collection and several devised and produced especially for the exhibition – which invite interaction, conjure up atmospheres and emotions, and generate “guided” engagement. Y, a key work by Höller from the TBA21 collection, is on display in the Marble Hall at the Upper Belvedere from 10 July to 31 August. A tunnel of lights, resembling those at fairs, encircles visitors like a whirl. In the shape of a Y, the installation articulates the dilemma of individual contingent choices.
At the Augarten, visitors encounter an array of functional devices, tools, constructions, and objects that enhance our sense of orientation, restriction, and displacement. Together they form a physical and conceptual experimental space. Surreal, giant hybrid mushrooms, a floatation tank simulating weightlessness, a clock that gives the time only at select intervals, dream-inducing toothpaste, and a bed that can rise up to a height of 3.5 meters, lead visitors through a transformative experience about unlearning, dreaming, drifting, and dance. In collaboration with Sofitel Vienna Stephansdom, the central elevator bed can be booked for a night, offering guests a truly unique experience.
The iconic work Y (2003), a walkway encircled by a ring of lightbulbs, seemingly reflected into infinity, is on show at the Upper Belvedere. The lightbulbs’ illumination is set so that light moves in a trail clockwise around the rings, staggered slightly from ring to ring to conjure up the illusion of a revolving spiral. Höller created this work in 2003 for Dreams and Conflicts. Delays and Revolution, shown in the Italian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
