These works by the two Austrian artists have been generously given to the museum from a private collection. The sculptures enter into a dialogue with the Carlone Hall’s allegorical pictorial program and the history of the Baroque palace. Participation, examining social and political questions, open creative processes, and exploring the idea of artistic authorship are all characteristics of Christine and Irene Hohenbüchler’s oeuvre. This large body of works in the gift to the Belvedere comprises early pieces by the sisters from the 1990s, examples of multiple authorship that were often created in collaboration with people from socially marginalized groups. The four-part installation *Käfige* (Cages) from 1993 addresses the locking away of social outsiders, juxtaposing this with feudal pomp in the Baroque ambience of the Upper Belvedere. It is difficult to take in the wide variety of Christine and Irene Hohenbüchler’s creative output. It encompasses large-scale installations as well as paintings, drawings, sculptures, furniture objects, textile elements, and projects in public spaces. Christine Hohenbüchler studied sculpture with Wander Bertoni at the Vienna University of Applied Arts, while Irene Hohenbüchler studied painting with Maria Lassnig, and they both completed the postgraduate program at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht, NL. Since completing their studies they have worked as an artist duo exploring art production outside prescribed structures and cultural frameworks. In 1997 they exhibited with Kunstwerkstatt Lienz at the *documenta X* and in 1999 they created one of the Austrian contributions to the Venice Biennale, also designing the “Iron Curtain” for the Vienna State Opera House that same year. Solo exhibitions have been staged at Kunstmuseum Bonn, the Ausstellungshalle zeitgenössische Kunst Münster, and Kunsthalle Krems. Christine Hohenbüchler is head of the Institute of Art and Design at the TU (technical university) Vienna. Irene Hohenbüchler is Professor of Cooperative Strategies at the Academy of Fine Arts Münster. ## Video ## CARLONE CONTEMPORARY The *CARLONE CONTEMPORARY* series presents contemporary works in the Carlone Hall of the Upper Belvedere in six-month intervals. From the frescoed ancient world of the deities Apollo and Diana to the present day, contemporary artists bridge the Baroque pictorial program with new artistic stances.
