Masterpieces of the Belvedere
The Belvedere - the former summer residence of Prinz Eugene of Savoyen - with its two castles and its surrounding park area ranks among the highlights of Baroque architecture and belongs to the UNESCO-world cultural heritage. Beyond that the Belvedere is the oldest museum of Austria. The art collection holds paintings from the Middle Ages to the present, with the focus on Austrian art. Paintings by Klimt are world-famous, above all the "Kiss", which was already acquired in 1908 and since then is on display in the Upper Belvedere. By means of about 250 selected masterpieces this volume illustrates artistic trends from the Medieval Period across the Baroque, Biedermeier and "Fin-de-siècle Vienna". Insightful commentaries to each historical epoch impart a concise knowledge of art.
