Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller (1793-1865) is often labelled "the" painter of the Biedermaier period. While this main part of his oeuvre prevails in popularity, it is less well-known, but all the more significant that Waldmüller abandoned the style of Biedermaier in his late work for his groundbreaking genre scenes. To quote Waldmüller, " in order to attain radiant colour you have to paint in the sunlight". These late works show dazzling, almost searing light, his figures seem positively bathed in light.
The present publication illustrates how much of a restlessly driven man Waldmüller was, not only in his art. Regardless of the consequences, he disputed with the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and railed against its teaching methods. Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller proved to be that visionary and modern spirit whose art of painting still inspires us nonetheless a hundred and fifty years after his death.
