The world of Lovis Corinth (1858–1925) is one of blazing color and intoxicating sensuality. This artist transgresses boundaries in his choice of subjects and themes, as well as in his painterly execution. His work is characterized by contradiction and vitality, it combines lust for life and morbidity, subtlety in coloration and brutality in its application. Corinth’s pictorial themes are often highly personal and exhibit intimate references, which are especially palpable in the portraits of his wife and children, but also in the scenes from their beloved family retreat on Lake Walchen. This publication retraces the artistic development of this exceptional painter and offers a reappraisal of the phenomenon that is Lovis Corinth.
