Über das Neue. Wiener Szenen und darüber hinaus / On the New. Viennese Scenes and Beyond
Forty-six artists and twenty-four art spaces, three of them from Linz and one from Salzburg, now come together in the three-part show with an extended running time. While each space was given carte blanche and six weeks for their presentation, the works of each individual artist will each be on view for twelve weeks. In terms of content, the presentation sketches a multilayered panorama conditioned by the curators’ selection of participants. In pursuing a decidedly feminist approach, they sought to fill the gaps and ask which positions are underrepresented in or completely missing from the institutional context. The diversity of the various scenes, strategies, genres, topics, and approaches is clearly reflected in the selection, and it ultimately enables a manifold representation of what art can be today—its themes, aesthetics, and forms of expression as well as the conditions under which it is created and perceived. Without denying the crises of the present, the participants in On the New nevertheless confidently and actively confront the realities of their lives, which have been transformed by pandemics, wars, and the rising cost of living.
