Art of the World
Three charismatic citizens of the world, three works, three cultures. Raden Saleh, Osman Hamdi Bey, and Hakob Hovnatanyan were captivated by the modern art of Europe. They lived and worked as mediators between European and Asian styles and achieved celebrity status in their countries of origin – yet for a long time, they’ve stood on the sidelines at the Belvedere. The guided tour explores the problems surrounding orientalism, colonialism, and mutual prejudice, as well as the creative process of intercultural exchange.
