PROGRAM
Franz Xaver Messerschmidt achieved success early in his career as a sculptor. Later, myths grew around his supposedly reclusive personality. But his famous “Character Heads” in fact mirror his own time: the eighteenth century and the Enlightenment, an age that reassessed the meaning of the individual. This guided tour offers an introduction to Messerschmidt’s work, his artistic parallels, and the scientific theories that have framed its interpretation.
