Art that provokes, art that shocks, and art that gives the public an allergic reaction: scandals in art are no recent invention— they’ve always been fashionable. In the Baroque it was Franz Xaver Messerschmidt whose work and indeed character were deeply mistrusted. In the Biedermeier period Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller attacked the academy, and later Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka were an explosive duo who broke one taboo after another. But how does an artwork become the target of public uproar? Who decides what is considered scandalous when and why? This tour astonishes visitors with prominent works that once sparked much anger and indignation.
