Library

The Belvedere library is a historic collection that has grown to around 120,000 items (books, journals, auction catalogues, and new media) covering all subjects of the visual arts.

Our goal is the thorough documentation of Austrian art through the purchase and exchange of books. We also regularly receive interesting and valuable donations from the art market and private individuals. The reference library is open to anyone interested, and our staff will gladly assist you in your research activities.

Online Catalogue

We are continuously digitizing the library’s holdings in an effort to make them available to the public. Currently, the magazine Ver Sacrum is available as an e-book, and selected catalogues of the Wiener Secession, the Künstlerbund Hagen, the Kunstsalon Pisko, and the Galerie Miethke are also accessible as full texts. Salomon Kleiner's engravings may be retrieved via our digital collection.

The online catalogue currently contains some 100.000 media items. Work is under way on the incorporation in the Library database of old stocks.

Digital Library

The Belvedere’s Digital Library offers free access to key resources in electronic form and as a searchable full text. Currently these include the exhibition catalogues of the Hagenbund and the Vienna Secession (up until 1910) and all the Galerie Miethke and Kunstsalon Pisko catalogues. We are continuously expanding our electronic resources.

Ver Sacrum Online

The sumptuously illustrated magazine Ver Sacrum (Latin for “Sacred Spring”) was published as the official organ of the Vereinigung bildender Künstler Österreichs (Association of Austrian Artists) and was the most important publication in the early years of the Vienna Secession. Ver Sacrum provides a wealth of information, lavishly illustrated and ornamented with the aim of spreading awareness of modern art. In addition to the images, the magazine includes literary articles, art criticism, and art-historical essays.

Ver Sacrum started out as a monthly magazine and from the third year was issued twice a month with a smaller print run.

  • Literature on museums, exhibition galleries, and other institutions (annual reports, inventory catalogues, museum guides)

  • Literature on individual artists (exhibition catalogues, monographs, catalogues of work)

  • Literature on the history of the Belvedere and on Belvedere exhibition projects

  • Works on art theory, secondary literature, reference works

  • Recent and historic art journals

  • Auction catalogues from the early nineteenth century onwards

  • Literature on Art Brut starting with the donation by Leo Navratil in 1995 and continuously enlarged since then

A copying machine is available, which enables the production of copies for a fee or the free production and storage of scans on USB.
