The Republic of Austria has acquired over 38,000 works of art since 1948, including early works by now-established artists as well as some very contemporary pieces. The Artothek des Bundes collects and administers these works, thereby providing a comprehensive documentation of modern and contemporary Austrian art. In 2012 the Belvedere took over the administration of the collection, now located at the Belvedere 21. Selected works are presented to the public in exhibitions or are on permanent loan in Austrian museums.
