Competing Ideas. Vienna 1900

At the turn of the century, Vienna was a place of contrasts: capital of the Habsburg Empire, melting pot of numerous cultures, center for intellectuals and artists. At the same time, it was also a city of slums and political tensions. The art scene was changing radically, too. A new union of artists—the Secession—was founded in 1897 by Gustav Klimt and others. It marked the birth of Viennese Modernism. Discover works from this turbulent period by Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Helene Funke, and Oskar Kokoschka.

The Belvedere and Its History

Baroque jewel, place of power and politics, home to art: today the Belvedere is a world-class museum, a World Heritage Site, and an Austrian landmark. When Prince Eugene’s summer residence was built, the grounds were still outside the city walls of Vienna. Hundreds of gardeners tended the opulent Baroque park. On this tour you can find out about people’s lives here in the past, the decisions made here, and the role art has always played in the history of the Belvedere.
