Side Job

© Belvedere, Wien

In 2019, the Joint Ventures event series explores questions of good life and (co-) existence. What does community solidarity look like? How will we remain empowered to act even in troubled times? This program presents artistic projects and strategies around the topic of side income.

A forum was created for the purpose of these discussions, one in which artists and cultural workers, museum visitors and flaneurs, people interested and those committed, amateurs and professionals alike could exchange ideas and network. Four Saturdays this year will feature presentations, lectures, discussions, readings, and performances dedicated to current topics of community.

Each time, a local community project will be introduced or a local building group will present their project. In doing so, a specific format in which to experience the content and community will be created. A Friday evening program of selected films at the Blickle Kino will set the mood for topics subsequently presented throughout the day Saturday.

How do we want to live?

Screening and discussion at the Blickle Kino

Friday, 11 October 2019 | 6.30 pm to 9 pm

VON HIER AUS (Beyond Elsewhere)
Katharina Lampert, Johanna Kirsch, A/F/P 2015, 89 min., DCP/Color,
OV with English subt.

Johanna Kirsch and Katharina Lampert grew up with the ‘68 ideals of their parents, colorful knit wool sweaters, Birkenstocks, demonstrations, and the desire to change the world. What was not quite valued then, later becomes the object of desire: “A house in the country – that is the dream! Growing vegetables together, canning food, slowing down, gazing into the fire at night, dropping out – a romantic fantasy. Our parent’s question, ‘How do we want to live?’ surreptitiously became ours and raised new questions.” This is how the film kicks off – the search for the good life leads the filmmakers to cooperatives and dropouts in Styria, France, and Portugal. The film portrays three people who each strategically opted for an alternative lifestyle on their own terms.

Followed by a public talk with the filmmakers and a discussion with members of the Wieserhoisl Cooperative from Deutschlandsberg and participation expert Martina Handler on the importance of the good life for all, collective ways of living and the relevance of sideline work.

Program at the Belvedere 21

Saturday, 12 October  2019 | 11 am to 6 pm

Event in German and English

Following the presentation of the workshop and housing project SchloR, botanist and expert in tropical forest ecology Hubert de Foresta from Montpellier will discuss the importance of non-wood forest products to generate (additional) income in the countries of Indonesia, Guinea, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

After a joint lunch break, the director of the Kunsthaus Graz, Barbara Steiner, will talk with artist Johanna Kandl about pitch and resin extraction as a side job. This is followed by presentations by visual artist Martin Piaček – who is based in Bratislava and in Rajka (Hungary) where he runs an orchard and dried-fruit plant as an artistic research project and secondary stream of income – and the curator Katalin Erdődi from Vienna, who, along with artist Antje Schiffers from Berlin, has adapted their long-term project I like Being a Farmer and Would like to Continue being One for Hungary.

We will conclude the day with a presentation by artist and entrepreneur Gabriele Sturm, who has founded a trade platform as an artistic project.
