Green Belvedere

A museum that matters – including when it comes to the environment and sustainability. In the spirit of this commitment to a more ecological and livable world, the Belvedere obtained the Austrian Ecolabel in 2021, an independent seal of approval with which not only commercial operations but cultural institutions commit themselves to meet ambitious environmental protection and quality standards.

On our journey to becoming a “green museum”, we have already launched a number of major and minor initiatives, with more steps and changes still to come.

What makes us "Green"

Substantive Engagement

Our programs are designed to promote a deeper understanding of sustainability issues. Our art education stimulates social discourse and encourages a sense of responsibility.

Properties

The Belvedere in its renovations and new building supports Austria's climate goals.

Suppliers

During our procurement processes, we apply the most economically advantageous tender parameters – ecological, social, and regional factors are co-determinants. We do not consider suppliers and products that do not meet sustainability criteria.

Sustainable Use of Resources

We manage our resources effectively. We aim to further reduce plastic waste; separate recyclables according to their sources; eliminate single-use packaging; and use fair, environmentally friendly products.

Equipment

Indoor air quality must not be adversely affected by office furniture. In accordance with the most recent EU labeling, our household appliances correspond to at least Class B to class A++. All certificates must comply with Austrian guidelines.

Reduce, reuse, recycle

Rather than disposing of items, recycling and refurbishing are given priority. We partner with ecologically-sound enterprises and donate unused infrastructure.

CO2 Reduction

By monitoring our carbon footprint, we aim to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases significantly. In this regard, we support projects with noteworthy ecological and social benefits, in cooperation with local activities.

Events

Our "Green Events" ensure festivities and events of high quality with sustainable products and ecological excellence.

Use of Eco-Friendly Products

We use only eco-labelled cleaning agents and environmentally friendly products to conserve and restore our objects.

Museum Shops

We have increased efforts to offer locally and sustainably produced products in our shops.

Barrier-free Visit

The museum aims to be easily accessible to everyone. Visitors with disabilities are supported in experiencing our programs through sensory-friendly resources. All restroom facilities are gender-neutral to prevent discrimination.

Belvedere: a museum that cares for sustainability matters

At the Belvedere we strive to incorporate the Four Pillars of Sustainability—environmental, economic, social, and cultural responsibility—into the very fabric of our work.

The museum’s sustainability strategy is based on the UN’s Seventeen Sustainable Development Goals, the government’s Agenda 2030, and the criteria of the Austrian Ecolabel.

A key aim is to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Regarding CO2 offsetting, we actively support approved projects with high environmental and social benefits. Where possible we collaborate with local initiatives.

In the fields of environmental and social responsibility, we focus on the careful use of resources. We promote the usage of environmentally friendly, socially fair products. We aim to re-use rather than to throw away. This includes donating surplus materials to charities and having equipment repaired by companies with an eco-social approach.

We demonstrate economic responsibility through procurement processes geared toward sustainability. These follow the best bidder principle, taking environmental and social factors into account. When selecting our suppliers, their social and environmental standards are key considerations.

As a certified venue for “Green Events,” we guarantee functions and events of the highest quality using sustainable products and demonstrating environmental responsibility.

We promote social responsibility in our education programs by stimulating discussion on sustainable living.

The Belvedere—a museum that sets the wheels of change in motion—and its visitors and staff thus make a valuable contribution to an environmentally secure and livable world.

Let´s act together

You want to help?

Choose environmentally friendly travel options.

The Belvedere is easily reached by public transportation, as well as offers a charging station for electric cars, a city bike station, and bicycle racks in the immediate vicinity.

Don't waste water.

Use the smaller flush button on the toilet to reduce the amount of water used, turn off the faucet while you wash your hands, and refill your PET bottles rather than throwing them away.

Help us by separating the waste.

At each of our sites, we provide ample opportunities to properly dispose of recyclable waste.

A new Photovoltaic System on the Roof of the Belvedere 21

The Belvedere considers climate protection a core mission and is investing in its ecological transformation. Since 2027, the museum has implemented several measures to reduce its consumption of electricity, heat, and water while increasing the use of renewable energy. In 2021, the Belvedere was awarded the Austrian Ecolabel, and in 2022, the Lower Belvedere received the Austrian Museum Quality Seal.

At the end of 2024, a photovoltaic system with a capacity of 228 kilowatt-peak (kWp) and an estimated annual yield of 210 MWh was installed on the roof of Belvedere 21, in partnership with the Federal Monuments Office and the Burghauptmannschaft. The electricity generated will be used exclusively at the Belvedere 21 site, resulting in substantial savings in electricity purchase costs.

The project is supported by the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Civil Service and Sport in collaboration with the Climate and Energy Fund. Financing was provided by the Recovery and Resilience Facility of the European Union’s NextGenerationEU recovery plan.
