Emil Jakob Schindler - Poetic Realism

With this special presentation, the Belvedere introduces one of the most important exponents of atmospheric Impressionism and explores the artist’s international relationship primarily to French nineteenth-century art.
Schindler, who was born in 1842 and died in 1892, celebrates a dual anniversary in 2012. With his new vision of nature, he developed an alternative to the opulent art practiced during the era of the Vienna Ringstraße. Pursuing neither a purely documentary realism nor an  exaggerated lyrical transfiguration, Schindler strove for the reconciliation of nature with manmade objects.
