Joseph Rebell
In Southern Light
In the summer and autumn of 2022, the Belvedere will dedicate a first-ever solo exhibition to the eminent landscape painter Joseph Rebell. The artist was born in Vienna in 1787 and worked from 1813 in Naples and Rome. His paintings were held in high esteem among art-interested audiences across Europe, including those in aristocratic and royal circles. The comprehensive show presents numerous works from public and private collections in Austria, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland, which can now be compared with one another for the first time.

Rebell Brings Daylight into Painting
Light is what set Rebell’s work apart from that of his contemporaries. His landscapes sprawl under a clear sky and are illuminated by the warm light of the southern sun. This gave his vistas of the Gulf of Naples, the Amalfi coast, and the islands of Capri and Ischia their particularly realistic and natural appearances. During his 1819 sojourn in Rome, the Austrian Emperor Franz I also recognized the modernity of Joseph Rebell’s paintings and immediately commissioned him with four large-format landscapes of the Naples region – that are now in the Belvedere. Shortly after, he appointed the painter to Director of the Imperial Painting Gallery in the Upper Belvedere. From his start in 1824 to his sudden death in December 1828, Rebell, with innovative vigor, went on to transform the gallery from a summer palace to a modern museum.

About the Exhibition
The exhibition takes place in the Orangery of the Lower Belvedere, with approximately 70 paintings and 40 drawings in an exhibition space of 350 square meters. While the thematic focus of the show is primarily centered on landscapes from southern Italy, adequate light is also shed on Joseph Rebell’s early drawings such as those from the northern Italian lakes and his Arcadian landscapes.
