Beneath the Surface: Art Restoration at the Belvedere
Johann Baptist Lampi the Younger and the Hidden Cupid
How can overpainting change the meaning of a painting? For the focus exhibition “IN-SIGHT: Johann Baptist Lampi The Elder and The Younger”, artworks at the Belvedere were restored and examined using technical imaging methods. X-ray and infrared analysis revealed details that had remained hidden for decades – including a Cupid concealed beneath later layers of paint, fundamentally altering the interpretation of the work.
The video offers behind-the-scenes insight into the restoration process and shows how technical investigations can open up new perspectives on historical paintings.
